birthday beer

My dear friend has started brewing beer.  We have all enjoyed his new found hobby.  Earlier this year he brought me a recipe book for beers and told me to pick one.  For my birthday we were going to make a batch of beer.  I was in heaven! Beer… one of my favorite things.  Cooking and creating in the kitchen… one of my favorite things.  Matty…. one of my favorite things.  If you would like to know how we made my batch of beer  or more about the beer we brewed you can check out his blog over at  Let me tell you something, it is a good beer with quite a kick.
Last week he and his family came over to taste the beer and to have dinner.  What goes perfectly with beer?  Pizza.  I had picked up a magazine/cookbook called Pizza on the Grill.  It has recipes and ideas on how to cook pizza on the barbecue.  At first, we thought idea was crazy.  After we were done… I am not sure a pizza will ever be cooked in my oven again!  The pizza crust was crispy and light.  We all enjoyed each and every slice.  Below are a few pictures of our adventure.
Our first pizza was a twist on pineapple and ham.  It was so yummy!  While there wasn’t any real sauce on this pizza, the onion marmalade held it all together nicely.

You put the dough right on the grill.  I know, it sounds crazy… but it is yummy!
For the first pizza, we layered an onion marmalade and grilled pineapple.
Then we added some prosciutto and topped it with brie.

When the toppings are melted into each other, take the pizza off the grill and set aside.  We put them on cookie sheets in a warm oven while we made the rest.

The second pizza was a veggie pizza.

We started with sauteed mushrooms and spinach.

Added baby heirloom tomatoes.

Topped that with grilled squash and roasted corn.  We crumbled goat cheese on top of all this goodness.

The second pizza was delicious!  It was full of flavor and the goat cheese gave it the extra little bite that really brought all the flavor of the veggies out.  Both of these pizzas will be made again!

And here is the reason we got together in the first place- beer!  It was so yummy! I have one more and plan on drinking on my actual birthday.  I love having friends that know me and love me. It is a blessing.

Beer, pizza and friends.  What could be better?
